What a great day! Attended by 7 local clubs, 82 taekwondo students with little to no competition experience took part in a celebration of our sport.
Elite Taekwondo (Robin Cheong and her students), put in a huge effort to run this event in conjunction with the “I Love TKD” group.
The day was a mixture of Kyorugi and Poomsae matches, all held within the Elite Taekwondo Dojang and all on one mat. This emphasised the idea that you do not need to have huge halls to run an enjoyable tournament – taekwondo events can be run as local community events.
For TNZ and the “I Love TKD” group, the tournament ticked all the boxes:
• those competing were not the “seasoned” veterans but the students who had never had the desire to go to a tournament
• parents and friends encouraged all those on the mats to “give it a go”
• Regular Coaches gave up their seats for students to coach students
• a fun environment (with no martial art politics!)
Hopefully those who took part will look to enter another tournament sometime in the coming year. Every student is encouraged to take further steps in their personal martial arts journey whilst also helping to grow our sport.
