“I Love TKD” is an initiative begun by members of the taekwondo community in New Zealand to promote the participation of taekwondo students in tournaments. The development of taekwondo in New Zealand is overseen by the national body, Taekwondo New Zealand.
Prior to Co-Vid, it would have been expected that 10% of all current students would attend at least one tournament each year. Evidence has shown that post-CoVid this has dropped to 3-5%, which is not good for the development of our sporting community. We need to encourage all our students to compete and support events throughout New Zealand.
As a consequence, a group of members decided to run a series of really low level tournaments aimed only at the 95% who do not attended tournaments.
The I Love TKD project has now reached it’s third year of offering leaning oppourtunities to our athletes. In 2026 this scope will be increased to include elite level workshop days and 3 day training camps.
The series has the support of Taekwondo New Zealand and the sponsorship of KWON NZ.
